Nerius second in javelin, Otto second in pole vault
Bayer athletes shine at World Final
The Bayer athletes aces saw …
Out the season in style at the World Athletics final in Stuttgart over the weekend. Steffi Nerius finished second in the javelin, Björn Otto matched that result in the pole vault and Silke Spiegelburg celebrated a new personal best in the pole vault.
Nerius registered an attempt of 64.90m in the javelin and was only beaten by new world champion Barbora Spotakova from the Czech Republi who won with 67.12m. The TSV Bayer 04 Leverkusen athlete who won the bronze medal at the world championships did, however, succeed in beating her German rival Christina Obergföll (Offenburg) for the first time this season. Nerius’ Bayer team-mate Linda Stahl finished eighth on 55.62m.
Elsewhere Silke Spiegelburg was also in excellent form. The TSV Bayer 04 athlete managed to clear 4.60m for the first time in her career. However, with a world-class field competing it was only enough for seventh place in the women’s pole vault. “I have finally done it,” said the reigning German champion after clearing the height in her third attempt.
Björn Otto also did well in the men’s pole vault on Sunday. The only TSV Bayer Dormagen athlete involved cleared 5.86m and finished second. World champion Brad Walker won by clearing 5.91m. World championship bronze medallist Danny Ecker also impressed and finished fourth with an attempt of 5.81m.
