Bayer one-two at DKB Cup
Nerius sets new personal best
For three years her personal best has stubbornly stayed at 66.52 metres but on Sunday Steffi Nerius showed what she is still made of. The TSV Bayer 04 Leverkusen athlete improved her personal best to 68.34 metres in the 1936 Olympic village on the outskirts of Berlin. “I never would have imaged being able to throw 68 metres,” said the delighted 35-year-old. Her throw was the best attempt by an athlete over 35 this year.

Nerius nearly stopped her rival Christina Obergföll from taking home ¤50,000 for four wins at the four-meeting spanning series. Nerius impressed with an attempt of 66 metres to pile on the pressure. The Olympic bronze medallist responded with a final attempt of 69.81 metres before Nerius came close again with her record-breaking attempt.

Obergföll will share the jackpot with Nadine Kleinert (shot put) who was also successful in Berlin. Both athletes had previously won their respective events in Kassel, Cotbus and the Bayer-Meeting in Leverkusen.

Elsewhere Bayer athletes celebrated a win in the men’s pole vault. Richard Spiegelburg dominated the event and won by clearing 5.70 metres. His team-mate Tobias Scherbarth completed an excellent result in the final meeting of the DKB-Cup by finishing second on 5.55 metres.
