Spiegelburg sets new personal best
Esser hoping for Beijing ticket after meeting norm
One week after the end of the official nomination period, hammer thrower Markus Esser finally met the norm for the Olympics. The TSV Bayer 04 Leverkusen athlete won the meet in Ried, Austria with an attempt of 79.04 metres. The German Athletics Association had set the norm for a ticket to the Olympics in Beijing, which will be held from 08 to 24 August, at 78.50 metres.
Now Esser is hoping that he will be a late addition to the squad. "I hope that it will still be considered and that I am allowed to go to Beijing. The German Athletics Association has already named the squad," said Esser, who has always managed to finish in the top eight at all major events in the last three years and is now desperately waiting to hear to the final decision of the German Olympic Committee on Tuesday.
Elsewhere, Steffi Nerius has already got her ticket to the Olympics in the bag. The Bayer athlete finished fourth in the javelin in Athens on Sunday on 61.66 metres. Nerius managed to hold off the challenge from her Leverkusen team-mate Linda Stahl (61.13m) but Czech world champion Barbora Spotakova (63.70m), Cuban world record holder Osleidys Menendez (63.63m) and European record holder Christina Obergföll (Offenburg/63.32m) all bettered her on the day.
Bayer pole vaulter Silke Spiegelburg impressed with an excellent display at the Golden League meeting in Rome (Italy) where she finished third. The TSV Bayer 04 Leverkusen athlete improved her personal best by five centimetres to set a new personal best of 4.70 metres. The German record, which has been standing at 4.77m for the past six years, is almost in striking distance now. Spiegelburg followed the example set by Russian Yelena Isinbaeva, who set a new world record of 5.03 metres.
Lars Börgeling led the way in triple glory for Leverkusen at the athletics meeting in Cuxhaven. Börgeling, who finished sixth in the pole vault in Athens four years ago, won the event with an attempt of 5.50m. Team-mates Malte Mohr and Richard Spiegelburg shared second place after clearing the same height as Börgeling. Because of the weather conditions, Börgeling later called the event a "wind lottery".
Also in Cuxhaven, Julia Hartmann finished third in the women''''s high jump. She shared third place with Deidre Ryan after clearing 1.85 metres. Former European champion Ingo Schultz, who is still suffering from an caalfg injury, finished eighth over 200 metres in 21.45 seconds.
