Nerius still in contention
Cottbus: Otto wins pole vault
TSV Bayer 04 Dormagen’s Björn Otto bolstered his confidence ahead of the World Athletics Championships which will start in Berlin on Saturday by securing a win in the pole vault at the 20th Athletics Meeting in Cottbus. Otto’s attempt of 5.65m was enough to let him take first place. Steven Lewis from Great Britain came second (5.60m) and Italy’s Giuseppe Gibilisco (5.50m) finished third. Elsewhere, TSV Bayer 04 Leverkusen’s Danny Ecker and Hendrik Gruber both failed to clear a single height.Steffi Nerius do have something to show but she was far from pleased with the 62.21m she delivered in the javelin. Nerius had to settle for second place behind Sunette Viljoen from South Africa (63.02m) but she is still in contention for the ¤30,000 jackpot in the DKB-Cup. Apart from the 37-year-old, Ralf Bartels (shot put) and Bianca Kappler (long jump) can still hope to get a share of the jackpot. The DKB-Cup will be decided at the final which will take place in the Olympic village in Berlin on 06 September.
However, despite still being close to winning a share of the prize money Nerius complained: “A perfect dress rehearsal is something completely different. It just was not happening today.” Nerius’ Bayer team-mate Katharina Molitor finished thrid in Cottbus with an attempt of 56.30m.
Schulz second in Marburg
The German multidiscipline athletes gathered in Marburg over the weekend where they took on their US counterparts in the traditional Thorpe-Cup. And the German heptathletes conjured up a major surprise. Germany won the Cup with a lead of 1030 points with Leverkusen’s Christine Schulz leading the way.
Schulz also finished second in the individual rankings. The German indoor champion (5974 points) was only beaten by Liz Roehrig from the United States (5990 points).
