Barcelona 1992
The particular thing about the Catalonian games was the fact that there was a united German team coming to Spain. Another thrilling fact was that, for the first time, 12 Bayer athletes gained medals in their disciplines. Five gold medals were secured and three boxers won one silver and two bronze medals. The three hockey players of RTHC Bayer Leverkusen secured silver after a tough and narrow final which even went into extra time.
Although Arnd Schmitt (photo) did not manage to defend the gold medal won in 1988 in the single discipline, he was able to secure gold together with his team in épée fencing. Stephan Volkert together with the united German team snatched gold and Petra Roßner surprisingly won in the 3,000 m individual race. A real highlight was the success of two Bayer athletes within only a few minutes. Dieter Baumann left five African runners behind him in the 5,000 m and Heike Henkel simply flew over the 2.02 m cross-bar in spite of an injured heel.
