TSV Bayer 04 Leverkusen

Disabled Sports

Katrin LaborenzThe Disabled-Sports Section of TSV Bayer 04 Leverkusen was founded in 1950 and is among the oldest, largest and most successful sports clubs for the disabled in Germany.

Athletes such as Petra Quade, Dirk Mimberg, Britta Jänicke, Jörg Frischmann and Britta Siegers have achieved major international success in their particular sports.

Yet disabled sports at TSV Bayer 04 is not just about competition. It is first and foremost for the rehabilitation and fun of its about 300 members.

Since the beginning of the nineties, the disabled-sports activities in Leverkusen have shifted more and more to athletics events. The athletes who train under Karl-Heinz Düe and Steffi Nerius have managed to win numerous World-Championship titles and Paralympic medals. Highly promising up-and-coming athletes like Astrid Höfte, Georg Meyer, Michaela Daamen, Katrin Green, Heinrich Popow and Andrea Hegen can look forward to bringing further international success to the Disabled-Sports Section of TSV Bayer 04.

The TSV Bayer sitting-volleyball team has also enjoyed plenty of success over the years. The highlights include eighteen German Championships, three European-Cup victories, medals in the Paralympics and World Championships and four-time winners of the Dutch "Division of Honour".

These top-class athletes play an important role in motivating other disabled people, often giving them the courage to try out such sports for themselves.

At TSV Bayer 04 Leverkusen, disabled athletes can also find people outside their particular section to train with as well as highly qualified coaches to help them enjoy their sport, whether at competition level or just for fun.

Other key areas of disabled sports in Leverkusen are the Children's and Youth Section and the Rehabilitation Section like the coronary-sports groups which work under medical supervision.

"Bosseln" (a German version of lawn bowling), table tennis, skittles, judo and soccer tennis are also particularly popular among the disabled, especially for rehabilitation purposes.
