TSV Bayer 04 Leverkusen
Fistball
Fistball, a sports discipline which has not exactly attracted the masses in the past, is enjoying increasing popularity. According to Michael Schneider, head of the Fistball Section at TSV Bayer 04 Leverkusen, "Fistball is not an old-man´s game but rather a high-performance family sport." Meanwhile, the section founded in 1904 has 88 members who are organised in 15 teams. Before the beginning of the field championship in 1999, the team was in the Bundesliga and underwent a radical change of generation. The average age is now 21 years. In the long run and hopefully starting soon, the team will match its former successes.
Specific attention is given to the training of new talents. 35 children are playing fistball in eight teams. At a communal weekend at the "Große Ledder" youth hostel the children each year prepare together for the open-air season. Popular highlights are trips of the Fistball Section to foreign countries.
