The Paralympics -
Olympic Games for disabled athletes
Bayer athletes have been successfully participating in the Paralympics since 1984. In Seoul, leg amputee Britta Siegers won six gold medals in swimming. At the 2000 Paralympics in Sydney, the German team won a total of 95 medals. There were 16 Bayer athletes on the team flying the German colours, among them the successful sitting volleyball team and track-and-field athletes from TSV Bayer 04 Leverkusen.
Of the 16 gold, 41 silver and 38 bronze medals won by the German team, members of TSV Bayer 04 Leverkusen won 2 gold and 4 bronze medals. The volleyball team won its fourth gold in succession.
At the 2004 Paralympics in Athens the German athletes won 19 gold, 28 silver and 32 bronze medals and finished eighth in the overall standings. The Bayer team consisted of 17 athletes. They returned to Leverkusen with five bronze medals. Heinrich Popow won three of those medals. After already finishing third over 100 and 200 m he set a new personal best of 5.43 m in the long jump to win yet another bronze medal. When he accepted his 200 m medal the Leverkusen based athlete was congratulated by German Chancellor Gerhard Schröder (picture.)
