Handball has been played at TSV Bayer Dormagen since 1949. The biggest success of the handball department include fifth place finishes in the Bundesliga in 1988 and 1991, finishing as runners-up in both the DHB Cup and the IHF Cup in 1993 and qualification for the semi-finals of the European Cup Winners’ Cup in 1994. In 2008, SV Bayer Dormagen secured promotion to the strongest handball league in the world after seven years absence. It was the third time in the history of the club that the team has won promotion. Dormagen were also promoted in 1987 and 1999. The sponsoring activities around TSV Bayer Dormagen came to an end after the 2007/2008 campaign due to the restructuring of Bayer’s activities in sport in 2007.
